Scandinavia – Return of the light / Return of the darkness
A film by Mi-Yong Brehm, Verena Feige
Documentary (2023, 43/52 Min.), ZDF/ARTE
Winter in Scandinavia is characterized by the polar night: months in which the sun is barely visible. Because a lack of light affects every organism, this film shows how people, animals and plants adapt to these extreme conditions. It is a journey through the north of Scandinavia, starting in absolute darkness on 21st December and ending with the appearance of the midnight sun in early summer.
End of June, the longest day of the year is celebrated throughout Scandinavia with festivals and bonfires – the night when the sun never sets. After months of darkness, the midnight sun lights up the north of Europe. The film, narrated by Katja Riemann, takes you on a journey starting on 21 June through Finland, Norway and Sweden, meeting people who deal with light in different ways and showing how animals and plants adapt to the challenge of the polar day until the sun finally disappears behind the horizon for a long time in winter.
